۳. کافران؛ گرفتار غرور و اختلاف

در روایتی از امام باقر(ع) نقل شده است: «ابوجهل و جماعتی از قریش نزد ابوطالب - عموی پیامبر - رفتند و گفتند: فرزند برادرت ما را آزار داده و خدایان ما را نیز ناراحت کرده است. او را بخوان و به او دستور بده که دست از خدایان ما بردارد تا ما هم به خدای او ناسزا نگوییم. ابوطالب کسی را خدمت پیامبر فرستاد. هنگامی که پیامبر وارد خانه شد و به اطراف اتاق نگاه کرد. دید کسی جز مشرکان در کنار ابوطالب نیست. گفت: «السلام علی من اتبع الهدی.» سپس نشست. ابوطالب, سخنان آنها را برای پیامبر شرح داد. پیامبر(ص) در پاسخ فرمود: آیا آنها حاضرند در جمله‌ای با من موافقت کنند و در سایة آن بر تمام عرب پیشی گیرند و حکومت کنند؟ ابوجهل گفت: بله. موافقیم. منظورت کدام جمله است؟ پیغمبراکرم فرمود: بگویید «لااله الاال». هنگامی که حضار این جمله را شنیدند. چنان وحشت کردند که انگشتانشان را در گوش‌هایشان گذاشتند و با سرعت خارج شدند؛ در حالی که می‌گفتند: «ما هرگز چنین چیزی را در آیین واپسین نشنیده‌ایم. این یک آیین ساختگی است.» پس خداوند در بارةٌ آنها آیات ۱ تا ۷ این سوره را نازل کرد.»
