And if We had willed, we could have elevated him thereby, but he adhered [instead] to the earth and followed his own desire. So his example is like that of the dog: if you chase him, he pants, or if you leave him, he [still] pants. That is the example of the people who denied Our signs. So relate the stories that perhaps they will give thought.

Had We wished, We would have surely raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his [base] desires. So his parable is that of a dog: if you make for it, it lolls out its tongue, and if you let it alone, it lolls out its tongue. Such is the parable of the people who deny Our signs. So recount these narratives, so that they may reflect.

And had We willed We could have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his own lust. Therefor his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he panteth with his tongue out. Such is the likeness of the people who deny Our revelations. Narrate unto them the history (of the men of old), that haply they may take thought.

That is that people's likeness who cried lies to Our signs. So relate the story; haply they will reflect.

و اگر می خواستیم [درجات و مقاماتش را] به وسیله آن آیات بالا می بردیم، ولی او به امور ناچیز مادی و لذت هایِ زودگذرِ دنیایی تمایل پیدا کرد واز هوای نفسش پیروی نمود؛ پس داستانش چون داستان سگ است [که] اگر به او هجوم بری، زبان از کام بیرون می آورد، واگر به حال خودش واگذاری [باز هم] زبان از کام بیرون می آورد. این داستان گروهی است که آیات ما را تکذیب کردند؛ پس این داستان را [برای مردم] حکایت کن، شاید [نسبت به امور خویش] بیندیشند.

و اگر می‌خواستیم، قدر او را به وسیله آن [آیات‌] بالا می‌بردیم، اما او به زمین [=دنیا] گرایید و از هوای نَفْس خود پیروی کرد. از این رو داستانش چون داستان سگ است [که‌] اگر بر آن حمله‌ور شوی زبان از کام برآورد، و اگر آن را رها کنی [باز هم‌] زبان از کام برآورد. این، مَثَل آن گروهی است که آیات ما را تکذیب کردند. پس این داستان را [برای آنان‌] حکایت کن، شاید که آنان بیندیشند.

Dileseydik, onu ayetlerimizle üstün kılardık; fakat o, dünyaya meyletti ve hevesine uydu. Durumu, üstüne varsan da, kendi haline bıraksan da, dilini sarkıtıp soluyan köpeğin durumu gibidir. İşte ayetlerimizi yalan sayan kimselerin hali böyledir. Sen onlara bu kıssayı anlat, belki üzerinde düşünürler.

Dan kalau Kami menghendaki, sesungguhnya Kami tinggikan (derajat)nya dengan ayat-ayat itu, tetapi dia cenderung kepada dunia dan menurutkan hawa nafsunya yang rendah, maka perumpamaannya seperti anjing jika kamu menghalaunya diulurkannya lidahnya dan jika kamu membiarkannya dia mengulurkan lidahnya (juga). Demikian itulah perumpamaan orang-orang yang mendustakan ayat-ayat Kami. Maka ceritakanlah (kepada mereka) kisah-kisah itu agar mereka berfikir.

اور اگر ہم چاہتے تو اسے ان ہی آیتوں کے سبب بلند کردیتے لیکن وہ خود زمین کی طرف جھک گیا اور اس نے خواہشات کی پیروی اختیار کرلی تو اب اس کی مثال کِتّے جیسی ہے کہ اس پر حملہ کرو توبھی زبان نکالے رہے اور چھوڑ دو تو بھی زبان نکالے رہے -یہ اس قوم کی مثال ہے جس نے ہماری آیات کی تکذیب کی تو اب آپ ان قصّوں کو بیان کریں کہ شاید یہ غور وفکر کرنے لگیں

অবশ্য আমি ইচ্ছা করলে তার মর্যাদা বাড়িয়ে দিতাম সে সকল নিদর্শনসমূহের দৌলতে। কিন্তু সে যে অধঃপতিত এবং নিজের রিপুর অনুগামী হয়ে রইল। সুতরাং তার অবস্থা হল কুকুরের মত; যদি তাকে তাড়া কর তবুও হাঁপাবে আর যদি ছেড়ে দাও তবুও হাঁপাবে। এ হল সেসব লোকের উদাহরণ; যারা মিথ্যা প্রতিপন্ন করেছে আমার নিদর্শনসমূহকে। অতএব, আপনি বিবৃত করুন এসব কাহিনী, যাতে তারা চিন্তা করে।
