تو ساکن آن شهر هستی

منظور از شهر مقدس در این آّیات» شهر مکّه است. شرافت و عظمت سرزمین مکه ایجاب می‌کند که خداوند به آن سوگند یاد کند؛ چرا که نخستین مرکز توحید و عبادت پروردگار است و انبیای بزرگ گرد این خانه طواف کرده‌اند؛ اما جملة «وّ نت حل هد اللّد» مطلب تازه‌ای را در بر دارد؛ این که این شهر به خاطر وجود پر فیض و برکت تو چنان عظمتی یافته که شایستهُ این سوگند شده است. ارزش سرزمین‌ها گاهی به ارزش انسان‌های مقیم آن است. از این روء قرآن علت قسم خوردنش به مکه را بیان کرده تا مبادا کافران مکه تصور کنند که قرآن برای خاک مکه یا بت‌های آنها اهمیت قائّل شده است.
