در میان دوزخ و آب سوزان

«آن» و «آنی» در اینجا به معنای آبی است که در نهایت حرارت و سوزندگی باشد و از ماد «انا» به معنای وقت است؛ زیرا آب سوزان به وقت و مرحلةٌ نهایی خود رسیده است. به این ترتیب» آنها از یک سو در میان شعله‌های سوزان جهنم می‌سوزند و تشنه می‌شوند و تمنای آب می‌کنند و از سوی دیگر آآب جوشان به آنها می‌دهند - یا بر آنها می‌ریزند - و این مجازاتی دردناک است. از آیات ۷۱ و۷۲ سورة غافر استفاده می‌شود که چشمةٌ سوزان حمیم در کنار جهنم است که نخست دوزخیان را در آن می‌برند و سپس در آتش دوزخ می‌افکنند: «در آن هنگام که غل و زنجیرها در گردن آنها قرار گرفته و آنها را می‌کشند و در آب جوشان وارد می‌کنند. سپس درآتش دوزخ افروخته می‌شوند.» تعبیر أیةٌ مورد بحث نیز با همین معنا متناسب است.
