شأن نزول

مفسران معتقدند این سوره در بارةٌ قبایلی نازل شده که بر یکدیگر تفاخر می‌کردند و با کثرت نفرات و جمعیت یا اموال و ثروت خود بر هم مباهات می‌کردند؛ تا انجا که برای بالا بردن آمار نفرات قبیله به گورستان می‌رفتند و قبرهای مردگان خود و دیگران را می‌شمردند. نقل شده است که امیرالموّمنین علی(ع) پس از خواندن این آیات فرمود: «شگفتا! چه مقصد دوری و چه دیدارکنندگان غافلی و چه کار بزرگ و سهمگینی! جای رفتگان را که نقطةٌ عبرت است. آنان تهی پنداشتند و چه پند و عبرتی! به رفتگان پوسیده در خاک که از آنها دور هستند. به تفاخر برخاستند! آیا بر گورهای پدرانشان یا به کثرتِ عدد مردگانشان خود را بسیار می‌شمارند؟ می‌خواهند که آن پیکرهای بی‌جان و بی‌جنبش باز گردند. مردگان اگر ماه عبرت باشند. بهتر از آن است که وسیلةٌ مفاخرت به حساب آیند و اگر با مشاهدهٌ آنان متواضع گردند. عاقلانه‌تر از آن است که آنان را مایة عزّت خود دانند.»
