And when Saul went forth with the soldiers, he said, "Indeed, Allah will be testing you with a river. So whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is indeed of me, excepting one who takes [from it] in the hollow of his hand." But they drank from it, except a [very] few of them. Then when he had crossed it along with those who believed with him, they said, "There is no power for us today against Goliath and his soldiers." But those who were certain that they would meet Allah said, "How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient."

As Saul set out with the troops, he said, ‘Allah will test you with a stream: anyone who drinks from it will not belong to me, but those who do not drink from it will belong to me, barring someone who draws a scoop with his hand.’ But they drank from it, [all] except a few of them. So when he crossed it along with the faithful who were with him, they said, ‘We have no strength today against Goliath and his troops.’ Those who were certain that they would encounter Allah said, ‘How many a small party has overcome a larger party by Allah’s will! And Allah is with the patient.’

And when Saul set out with the army, he said: Lo! Allah will try you by (the ordeal of) a river. Whosoever therefore drinketh thereof he is not of me, and whosoever tasteth it not he is of me, save him who taketh (thereof) in the hollow of his hand. But they drank thereof, all save a few of them. And after he had crossed (the river), he and those who believed with him, they said: We have no power this day against Goliath and his hosts. But those who knew that they would meet Allah exclaimed: How many a little company hath overcome a mighty host by Allah's leave! Allah is with the steadfast.

When Talut set forth with the armies, he said: "Allah will test you at the stream: if any drinks of its water, He goes not with my army: Only those who taste not of it go with me: A mere sip out of the hand is excused." but they all drank of it, except a few. When they crossed the river,- He and the faithful ones with him,- they said: "This day We cannot cope with Goliath and his forces." but those who were convinced that they must meet Allah, said: "How oft, by Allah's will, Hath a small force vanquished a big one? Allah is with those who steadfastly persevere."

And when Saul went forth with the hosts he said, 'God will try you with a river; whosoever drinks of it is not of me, and whoso tastes it flot, he is of me, saving him who scoops up with his hand.' But they drank of it, except a few of them; and when he crossed it, and those who believed with him, they said, 'We have no power today against Goliath and his hosts.' Said those who reckoned they should meet God, 'How often a little company has overcome a numerous company, by God's leave! And God is with the patient.'

پس زمانی که طالوت با سپاهیان [برای جنگ با دشمن از شهر] بیرون رفت، گفت: بی تردید خدا شما را به وسیله نهر آبی آزمایش می کند؛ پس هر که [به هنگام تشنگی] از آن [سیر] بنوشد، از من نیست و هر که از آن نخورد، از من است، مگر کسی که با دستش کفی آب برگیرد [که او نه از من است و نه مردود از سپاه]. پس جز اندکی از آنان همگی از آن نوشیدند. و زمانی که او و کسانی که با او ایمان آورده بودند از نهر گذشتند، [گروهی از آنان] گفتند: ما را امروز قدرت مقابله با جالوت و سپاهیانش نیست. ولی کسانی که یقین داشتند که دیدارکننده خدایند، گفتند: چه بسا گروه اندکی که به توفیق خدا بر گروه بسیاری پیروز شدند، و خدا باشکیبایان است.

و چون طالوت با لشکریان [خود] بیرون شد، گفت: «خداوند شما را به وسیله رودخانه‌ای خواهد آزمود. پس هر کس از آن بنوشد از [پیروان‌] من نیست، و هر کس از آن نخورد، قطعاً او از [پیروان‌] من است، مگر کسی که با دستش کفی برگیرد. پس [همگی‌] جز اندکی از آنها، از آن نوشیدند. و هنگامی که [طالوت ] با کسانی که همراه وی ایمان آورده بودند، از آن [نهر] گذشتند، گفتند:» امروز ما را یارای [مقابله با ]جالوت و سپاهیانش نیست. «کسانی که به دیدار خداوند یقین داشتند، گفتند:» بسا گروهی اندک که بر گروهی بسیار، به اذن خدا پیروز شدند، و خداوند با شکیبایان است.

Talut orduyla birlikte ayrıldıktan sonra, "Doğrusu Allah sizi bir ırmakla deneyecektir, ondan içen benden değildir, onu tatmayan eliyle sadece bir avuç avuçlayan müstesna şüphesiz bendendir" dedi. Onlardan pek azı hariç, sudan içtiler. Kendisi ve kendisiyle olan inananlar ırmağı geçince, "Bugün Calut ve ordusuna karşı koyacak gücümüz yok" dediler. Kendilerinin Allah'a kavuşacağını bilenler ise: "Nice az topluluk çok topluluğa Allah'ın izniyle üstün gelmiştir, Allah sabredenlerle beraberdir" dediler.

Maka tatkala Thalut keluar membawa tentaranya, ia berkata: "Sesungguhnya Allah akan menguji kamu dengan suatu sungai. Maka siapa di antara kamu meminum airnya; bukanlah ia pengikutku. Dan barangsiapa tiada meminumnya, kecuali menceduk seceduk tangan, maka dia adalah pengikutku". Kemudian mereka meminumnya kecuali beberapa orang di antara mereka. Maka tatkala Thalut dan orang-orang yang beriman bersama dia telah menyeberangi sungai itu, orang-orang yang telah minum berkata: "Tak ada kesanggupan kami pada hari ini untuk melawan Jalut dan tentaranya". Orang-orang yang meyakini bahwa mereka akan menemui Allah, berkata: "Berapa banyak terjadi golongan yang sedikit dapat mengalahkan golongan yang banyak dengan izin Allah. Dan Allah beserta orang-orang yang sabar".

اس کے بعد جب طالوت علیھ السّلام لشکر لے کرچلے تو انہوں نے کہا کہ اب خدا ایک نہر کے ذریعہ تمہارا امتحان لینے والا ہے جو اس میں سے پی لے گا وہ مجھ سے نہ ہوگا اور جو نہ چکھے گا وہ مجھ سے ہوگا مگر یہ کہ ایک چلّو پانی لے لے. نتیجہ یہ ہوا کہ سب نے پانی پی لیا سوائے چند افراد کے---- پھر جب وہ صاحبانِ ایمان کو لے کر آگے بڑھے لوگوں نے کہا کہ آج تو جالوت اور اس کے لشکروں کے مقابلہ کی ہمت نہیں ہے اور ایک جماعت نے جسے خدا سے ملاقات کرنے کا خیال تھا کہا کہ اکثر چھوٹے چھوٹے گروہ بڑی بڑی جماعتوں پر حکم خدا سے غالب آجاتے ہیں اور اللہ صبر کرنے والوں کے ساتھ ہے

অতঃপর তালূত যখন সৈন্য-সামন্ত নিয়ে বেরুল, তখন বলল, নিশ্চয় আল্লাহ তোমাদিগকে পরীক্ষা করবেন একটি নদীর মাধ্যমে। সুতরাং যে লোক সেই নদীর পানি পান করবে সে আমার নয়। আর যে, লোক তার স্বাদ গ্রহণ করলো না, নিশ্চয়ই সে আমার লোক। কিন্তু যে লোক হাতের আঁজলা ভরে সামান্য খেয়ে নেবে তার দোষঅবশ্য তেমন গুরুতর হবে না। অতঃপর সবাই পান করল সে পানি, সামান্য কয়েকজন ছাড়া। পরে তালূত যখন তা পার হলো এবং তার সাথে ছিল মাত্র কয়েকজন ঈমানদার, তখন তারা বলতে লাগল, আজকের দিনে জালূত এবং তার সেনাবাহিনীর সাথে যুদ্ধ করার শক্তি আমাদের নেই, যাদের ধারণা ছিল যে, আল্লাহর সামনে তাদের একদিন উপস্থিত হতে হবে, তারা বার বার বলতে লাগল, সামান্য দলই বিরাট দলের মোকাবেলায় জয়ী হয়েছে আল্লাহর হুকুমে। আর যারা ধৈর্য্যশীল আল্লাহ তাদের সাথে রয়েছেন।
