23

وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَآ مِن فِى مِّن إِلَّا إِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ ﴿٢٣﴾

Translation

Saheeh International

And similarly, We did not send before you any warner into a city except that its affluent said, "Indeed, we found our fathers upon a religion, and we are, in their footsteps, following."

    And they will say, "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way.

  • إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا خُلُقُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

    This is not but the custom of the former peoples,

  • وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

    And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

  • وَلَٰكِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَا قُرُونًا فَتَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْعُمُرُ وَمَا كُنتَ ثَاوِيًا فِىٓ أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ تَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتِنَا وَلَٰكِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ

    But We produced [many] generations [after Moses], and prolonged was their duration. And you were not a resident among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our verses, but We…
