Tafsīr

al-Mīzān

al-Mīzān

al-Ṣamad = absolute self-sufficiency and the term of all need; the sūra as a whole is the positive creed of Tawhid, expounding lā ilāha illā huwa.

Majmaʿ al-Bayān

Ẓāhir (apparent)

"God, the Eternally Besought (al-Ṣamad)" — the One upon whom all depend while He depends on none.

Bāṭin / reported

Imam-narrations gloss al-Ṣamad apophatically — no jawf (interior), neither eats nor sleeps, endures when creation perishes — i.e. anti-corporeal tanzīh, not bodily description.

Theology

Read under tanzīh; converges with 42:11.
