تا ‎٩‏ . منظور از سین و علیّین

در تفسیر این آیات» دو نظریه وجود دارد: ۱- منظور از کتاب» همان نام اعمال انسان‌ها است که هیچ کار کوچک و بزرگی نیست مگر این‌که بی کم و کاست در آن ثبت است. بنابر این تفسیرء سجّین که به معنای زندان استء کتاب جامعی است که نامه اعمال همه بدکاران در آن گردآوری شده. در مقابل» اعمال همةٌ نیکوکاران در کتاب دیگری به نام «علَیّین» یعنی مکان بالا جمع آوری می‌شود. ۲- کتاب در این آیات به معنای مکتوب (چیز نوشته‌شده) است و منظور از آن» سرنوشت و حکم قطعی الهی بوده و منظور از سجین» جهنم و مراد از علیّین» بهشت است. بنابر این تفسیرء معنای ایات چنین می‌شود که سرنوشتی که خدا برای بدکاران به خاطر گناهانشان رقم زده» زندانی در جهنم است و سرنوشتی که برای نیکوکاران رقم خورده» درجات بالای بهشت است. در حدیثی از امام باقر(ع) می‌خوانیم: «سجین. زمین هفتم. و علیین, آسمان هفتم است (شاید اشاره به پایین‌ترین و برترین مکان)» از روایات متعددی نیز استفاده می‌شود که اعمالی که لایق قرب خدا نیست» سقوط می‌کند و در سجین قرار می‌گیرد.
