A theme in the Qurʾān

ٱلْعِبَادَة

Al-ʿIbāda

The root ع-ب-د runs 275 times, and it does not primarily mean «to pray». It means to serve — what a ʿabd, a bondsman, is to the one he belongs to. Which makes one habit of the Qurʾān strange and deliberate: at the moments it raises Muḥammad highest, it calls him neither prophet nor messenger but «His servant» 17:1. And the same three letters, in another form, are what Mūsā uses to accuse Pharaoh of enslaving a people 26:22. One root for the highest rank and the worst crime. What is the Qurʾān doing with it?

the noun ʿibāda

countedThe abstract noun «worship» itself is rare — nine occurrences. The Qurʾān prefers the verb and the servant to the abstraction.

The root ع-ب-د does not primarily mean «to pray». It means to serve — the relation of a ʿabd, a servant or bondsman, to the one he belongs to. Which is why the Qurʾān can use it for the highest honour it gives a human being: when it wants to name the Prophet at the greatest moments of his life, it does not call him prophet or messenger. It calls him «His servant» — «Exalted is He who took His servant by night» 17:1; «Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His servant» 25:1. So the page's question is not «how does one worship?» — the Qurʾān is famously sparing about that. It is: what does the book mean by calling a person a servant, and why does it treat that as a rank rather than a demotion?

The purpose, stated once and flatly

interpreted· quran by quran

Counted: the clause illā li-yaʿbudūn occurs once in the Qurʾān. Read: that it states the aim of creation is the reading — one the verse's own wording invites.

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

The Qurʾān's most direct statement of purpose — and it names the jinn first, so the claim is not about humans alone.

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

It is You we worship and You we ask for help.

And the form it takes in the prayer every Muslim repeats: «You alone we serve» — with the object placed before the verb, which in Arabic is how you say only You.

Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

The Night Journey verse names him not «Our prophet» but «His servant». The most exalted moment, the most humble noun.

The counts and the forms are counted, and the six branches sum to all 275. That serving God and being enslaved by Pharaoh are one root — that the Qurʾān is saying something by using it both ways — is a reading. The text sets the two uses down without commenting on the overlap.

In the verse about the Night Journey, what title does the Qurʾān give Muḥammad?

The two servitudes the root describes

interpreted· quran by quran

Both columns are the same three letters. The Qurʾān uses ع-ب-د for the service it commands and for the enslavement it condemns — the difference is entirely in whom one serves.

Servant of God

عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ

A belonging the Qurʾān presents as freedom from every other claim — and as the title of honour it gives its own Prophet.

  • It is the name given at the highest moments: the Night Journey 17:1, the sending down of the Criterion 25:1.
  • It is what ʿĪsā says of himself when asked: «I am the servant of God» 19:30.
  • It carries a promise, not a threat: «O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of God» 39:53.
  • And it is described as the one status Satan cannot reach: «over My servants you have no authority» 17:65.

Serving what cannot serve you

مَا تَعْبُدُونَ

The same verb, aimed elsewhere — and the Qurʾān's complaint is consistently that the object is powerless, not that the devotion is excessive.

  • The charge is incapacity: «do you worship what does not benefit you at all, nor harm you?» 21:66.
  • Ibrāhīm's question to his father is about function, not loyalty: «why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see?» 19:42.
  • On the Day, the Qurʾān says the served will disown the servers 46:6.
  • And the causative form makes the human version a crime: Pharaoh «enslaved» the Children of Israel 26:22.

Who the Qurʾān says is already serving

interpreted· quran by quran

Each is named by the verse it carries; the grouping is the reading. The list is wider than one might expect — the Qurʾān does not restrict the verb to human religion.

The named servants

Individuals the Qurʾān calls ʿabd directly.

Muḥammadعَبْدِهِ

At the Night Journey 17:1 and the revelation 25:1.

ʿĪsāعَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ

His own first words in the Qurʾān, spoken from the cradle 19:30.

Ayyūb, Dāwūd, Sulaymānنِعْمَ ٱلْعَبْدُ

«an excellent servant» — the phrase used of Ayyūb 38:44 and of Sulaymān 38:30.

The unnamed and the unseen

غير المرئي

The Qurʾān extends the verb well beyond the human.

The angelsعِبَادٌ مُّكْرَمُونَ

Everything in the heavens and earthكُلٌّ لَّهُۥ قَٰنِتُونَ

«All are devoutly obedient to Him» 2:116 — obedience described as the default state of creation.

The servants of the Merciful

عِبَادُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ

The phrase occurs once in the Qurʾān 25:63, and what follows is a portrait — the text answers «who are the servants?» with a description of conduct, not of ritual.

They walk gently, and answer peaceهَوْنًا

«those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them, say 'peace'» 25:63.

They spend without extravagance or stinginessقَوَامًا

The middle path between the two, named explicitly 25:67.

They do not bear false witnessلَا يَشْهَدُونَ ٱلزُّورَ

«and when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity» 25:72.

What the Qurʾān attaches to servanthood

interpreted· quran by quran

Each outcome is stated by the verse it carries; the arrangement is the reading.

«You alone we serve»

The clause the Qurʾān puts in every worshipper's mouth, with You placed first for exclusivity 1:5.

  • Help becomes askable

    1:5

The same verse continues «and You alone we ask for help» — the Qurʾān pairs the two clauses and never separates them 1:5.

  • Immunity from Satan's authority

    17:65

«Indeed, over My servants you have no authority» — said to Iblīs directly 17:65.

  • A door left open after failure

    39:53

«O My servants who have transgressed against themselves — do not despair» 39:53. The address survives the sin.

  • Freedom from every other master

    21:66

The negative form of the same claim: what is served besides God «cannot benefit you nor harm you» 21:66.

  • And on the Day, the served disown the servers

    46:6

«and they will be deniers of their worship» 46:6 — a loyalty that does not survive the reckoning.

Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

The highest moment, the humblest noun.

قُلْ يَٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

The address that survives the transgression.

وَعِبَادُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ ٱلْجَٰهِلُونَ قَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًا

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,

And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"

The root turned into an accusation against a king.

وَلَآ أَنتُمْ عَٰبِدُونَ مَآ أَعْبُدُ

Nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.

The line the sūra of disavowal draws.

إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَٰنٌ وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ وَكِيلًا

Indeed, over My [believing] servants there is for you no authority. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.

The one place Satan is told he has no reach.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -

The first command to humanity, grounded in the creating.

The humblest noun

interpreted· quran by quran

There is a pattern on this page that the counts can show but not explain. The Qurʾān has a word for prophet and a word for messenger, and it uses both of Muḥammad often. But at the three moments it lifts him highest — the night journey 17:1, the descent of the Criterion 25:1, the nearest approach 53:10 — it sets those words aside and calls him His servant. The same root, in its causative, is what Mūsā throws at Pharaoh: you enslaved the Children of Israel 26:22. So the book uses one set of letters for the highest rank a person can hold and for the worst thing one person can do to another. The difference is not in the posture. It is entirely in who is on the other end. What a map cannot tell you is which one you are doing. The Qurʾān seems to think the test is visible in something small: how you walk down a street, and what you say when someone speaks to you badly 25:63.

Questions

In the verse about the Night Journey, what title does the Qurʾān give Muḥammad?

«Exalted is He who took His servant by night» 17:1 — bi-ʿabdihi. The same choice is made when the revelation is sent down 25:1 and at the closest approach described in the Qurʾān 53:10. At the three moments the text raises him highest, it reaches for the humblest noun it has. That is the page's whole argument in one word.

The Qurʾān names «the servants of the Most Merciful» once, then describes them. What is the first thing it says about them?

«And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them, they say 'peace'» 25:63. The night prayer does come — four verses later. But the portrait opens with a manner of walking and of answering insult, which is the Qurʾān's way of saying that servanthood shows up first in how a person moves through a street.
