«abiding» (khuld) beside Garden / Fire
«Not equal»
interpreted· quran by quranThe verse that sets the whole subject as a pair, not two topics 59:20.
Not equal are the companions of the Fire and the companions of Paradise. The companions of Paradise - they are the attainers [of success].
The Qurʾān's own framing: the Fire and the Garden are not two subjects but one contrast — «and the companions of the Garden, they are the triumphant».
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
And the choice between them is success: «whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to the Garden has triumphed» — worldly life a passing enjoyment beside it.
A counted balance — and an honest caution
countedWhat the form-count does and does not show.
That jannah (147) and nār (145) fall so close is a real, countable fact of the forms — and it is worth stating carefully, because such near-symmetries are often inflated into miracles. Here the honest picture: the root j-n-n runs 201 times, but only 147 are the Garden — the rest are jinn and majnūn, «madness». The root n-w-r runs 194 times, of which 145 are the Fire and 43 are nūr, «light». So the balance is between two senses, cleanly separated by grammar, not between two whole roots. What the number cannot tell you is meaning: that the two are held up as equals to weigh is the Qurʾān's own doing 59:20 — a matter of the text's design, not of arithmetic.
Where the Garden lives in the Qurʾān
countedWord occurrences of the root j-n-n per sūra, QAC morphology over the Ḥafṣ/Tanzil text. NB the root spans jannah (garden, 147×), jinn, and majnūn — this chart counts the whole root, not the garden-sense alone. Revelation order is the traditional Egyptian chronology, not a computed fact.

The two companies
interpreted· quran by quranThe Qurʾān often states the two destinies as twinned verses — same grammar, opposite end. Anchored on the pair 2:81/2:82 and their meeting in 7:44.
Aṣḥāb al-Jannah — the people of the Garden
Believers who did good, promised a garden beneath which rivers run, abiding.
- «Those who believe and do righteous deeds — those are the companions of the Garden, abiding therein» 2:82.
- Its signature image: «gardens beneath which rivers flow» — the root's top statistical companions are taḥt (beneath), jarā (flow), nahr (rivers).
- Its width «is the heavens and the earth, prepared for the God-conscious» 3:133.
Aṣḥāb al-Nār — the people of the Fire
Those who earned evil and were encompassed by it, promised the Fire, abiding.
- «Whoever earns evil and his sin encircles him — those are the companions of the Fire, abiding therein» 2:81.
- The two companies speak across the gulf: «the companions of the Garden call out to the companions of the Fire, We have found our Lord's promise true — have you?» 7:44.
- Its shared axis with the Garden is khuld, abiding — the same eternity, opposite in content 98:6.
One question
interpreted· quran by quranTest your reading
The Qurʾān's most repeated image of the Garden is «gardens beneath which ___ flow». Beneath which what?
The many names of each
interpreted· quran by quranThe Qurʾān rarely says only «the Garden» or «the Fire» — it names them, and the names carry meaning the plain words do not.
Gardens of ʿAdn — perpetual residence
Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein» 98:8 — the settled, unending home.
The Garden of Eternity
Is that better, or the Garden of Eternity promised to the God-conscious?» 25:15 — named for the very abiding that defines it.
Chambers above chambers
For them are chambers, above them chambers built high, beneath which rivers flow» 39:20 — the Garden as an ascending architecture.
Hell — al-Jaḥīm, the Blaze
The criminals will be in the punishment of Hell (jahannam), abiding» 43:74 — the Fire named as a fixed abode.
Does «forever» in the Fire truly have no end?
interpreted· quran by quranA genuine, long-standing fork. Both destinies are described as khālidīn, «abiding» — but two verses attach an exception, «except what your Lord wills» 11:107–11:108, and the theologians read it two ways.
When 11:107 says the people of the Fire abide «as long as the heavens and earth endure, except what your Lord wills», does the exception mean Hell's punishment can end?
Reading AEternal without end (the majority)
The Fire's khuld is truly unending for the deniers. «They will not be relieved of it, and they will despair therein» 43:74 and its keepers refuse even to «lighten a single day» 40:49. The exception in 11:107 refers to a stage or to God's untrammelled power, not to release.
- Read khālidīn fīhā abadā, «abiding forever», at face value across the many verses that use it.
- The istithnāʾ («except what your Lord wills») guards God's absolute freedom without promising an exit.
Reading BA punishment that finally ceases
The very same exception — «except what your Lord wills» 11:107 — is read as leaving a door: God's mercy may bring even the Fire's staying to a close. The abiding is real and terrible, but not, on this reading, metaphysically endless.
- Held by a minority across the traditions (some early figures; later Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn al-Qayyim are cited for a terminating Hell).
- «My mercy encompasses all things» 7:156 is read to bear on the ultimate horizon of the Fire.
The atlas records the fork — it crowns no reading.

The Garden and the Fire in the text
interpreted· quran by quranBoth destinations, as the Qurʾān draws them.
And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.
The promise: «gardens beneath which rivers flow… and spouses purified, abiding therein forever».
The example of Paradise, which the righteous have been promised, is [that] beneath it rivers flow. Its fruit is lasting, and its shade. That is the consequence for the righteous, and the consequence for the disbelievers is the Fire.
The parable of the Garden «promised to the God-conscious»: its fruit and shade unceasing.
Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?
Rivers of water, milk, wine, and honey — the Garden drawn in sensuous detail.
Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.
The Fire's severity: «every time their skins are roasted, We replace them» — a warning, not a relish.
And the companions of Paradise will call out to the companions of the Fire, "We have already found what our Lord promised us to be true. Have you found what your Lord promised to be true?" They will say, "Yes." Then an announcer will announce among them, "The curse of Allah shall be upon the wrongdoers."
The dialogue across the gulf between the two companies.
[They will be] abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will. Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends.
The disputed verse: abiding «except what your Lord wills» — the exception the fork turns on.
The web the two destinations sit in
interpreted· quran by quranGarden and Fire are opposites bound by a shared axis — khuld, abiding. Each is the recompense of a road: faith-and-good-works, or denial.
Two ends, and the word between them
interpreted· quran by quranThe Qurʾān will not let the Garden be described without the Fire near it, nor the Fire without the Garden — «not equal» 59:20, but always weighed together, so that each is understood by what it is not. They are drawn in the same grammar: khālidīn fīhā, abiding therein — the one word, khuld, that makes a garden a home and a fire a sentence. And it is on that one word that the tradition still divides: whether the Fire's «forever» is, like the Garden's, without horizon, or whether «except what your Lord wills» 11:107 leaves even Hell inside the reach of a mercy that «encompasses all things». The page can lay the two readings side by side; it cannot close the door the verse leaves ajar.
