A theme in the Qurʾān

Al-Ribā

The root of ribār-b-w, ر-ب-و — means simply to increase, to swell, to grow. So the Qurʾān's verdict on usury turns on a paradox: the very word for increase is the word it condemns. Why does the text call one kind of growth a crime, and answer it — alone among sins — with «a war from God and His Messenger» 2:279? And what does it set in ribā's place?

The verdict, and the paradox

interpreted· quran by quran

The founding pair: the ruling 2:275 and the image that carries it 2:276.

Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah. But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

The pivot line: «Allah has permitted trade (al-bayʿ) and has forbidden ribā». Both move wealth and both yield gain — the text draws the line not at profit but at how it is taken.

Allah destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And Allah does not like every sinning disbeliever.

«Allah wipes out ribā and makes grow the charities». The verb for 'makes grow' is yurbī — the same root, r-b-w, as ribā itself.

The word turned against itself

interpreted· quran by quran

In 2:276 the two clauses share one root. Ribā is r-b-w — increase. And the thing God is said to growyurbī — is r-b-w again. The sentence takes the usurer's own word, increase, and hands it to charity: God shrinks the pile that swelled by ribā and swells the gift given away. The Makkan seed-verse 30:39 plays the same root three times: «whatever you give of ribā (r-b-w) to increase (li-yarbuwa, r-b-w) within people's wealth does not increase (yarbū, r-b-w) with Allah — but what you give in zakāt, seeking God's face, those are the multipliers». Two kinds of increase, one word: the one that grows in ledgers and shrinks before God, and the one that vanishes from the hand and multiplies with Him.

A prohibition revealed in stages

interpreted· quran by quran

The traditional chronology reads ribā as legislated gradually — a Makkan warning, then a Madinan limit, then the full ban. Revelation order is a scholarly reconstruction, not a computed fact.

  1. A quiet warning, not yet a law

The first mention is Makkan and merely deflating: increase sought through ribā «does not increase with Allah», while zakāt does. Ribā is not yet forbidden — it is weighed and found empty.

  2. Early Madina3:130

    A limit: not «doubled and multiplied»

In Madina the command narrows: «do not devour ribā doubled and multiplied (aḍʿāfan muḍāʿafah)» — naming the compounding, snowballing debt of the pre-Islamic market.

  3. Late Madina2:278

    The full prohibition

The Baqara passage closes the matter: trade is licit, ribā is forbidden outright, its remainder must be dropped, and refusal is met with «a war from God and His Messenger».

Two kinds of increase

interpreted· quran by quran

The subject's own attribute — increase — is the negative pole here; the text sets its counterfeit against its true form. Anchored on the two āyāt where the roots meet 2:276 and where they are weighed 30:39.

Ṣadaqa — increase that grows

Wealth given away, which God «makes grow» and multiplies.

  • The gift leaves the hand and swells with God — yurbī 2:276.
  • Given seeking God's face, its givers are «the multipliers» (al-muḍʿifūn) 30:39.
  • The debtor in hardship is given time; to remit the debt as charity «is better for you» 2:280.

Ribā — increase that is wiped

Wealth swollen through another's need, which God erases.

  • It grows in the ledger but God «wipes it out» — yamḥaqu 2:276.
  • Sought to increase «within people's wealth», it «does not increase with Allah» 30:39.
  • It is «consuming the people's wealth unjustly (bi'l-bāṭil4:161.

The root on the high ground

interpreted· quran by quran

Form counts computed (QAC morphology, Ḥafṣ/Tanzil): r-b-w occurs 20× in 15 verses; the noun ribā is only 7 of the 20. Rabwa occurs 2× — 2:265 and 23:50.

The root r-b-w does not belong to the usurer. Of its twenty occurrences, only seven are the noun ribā; the rest scatter into other growths — the earth that stirs and swells with rain 22:5, and twice a rabwa, a high ground. One of those two high grounds stands inside the charity parable itself: the gift given seeking God's pleasure is «a garden on a rabwa — struck by downpour, it yields its fruit twofold» 2:265. Ten verses later the same sūrah delivers the verdict on ribā 2:275. Before al-Baqara ever condemns the false increase, it has already planted the root's true one — on a hill, doubling — in the description of giving. The proximity is the muṣḥaf's; reading it as deliberate is ours.

The increase that is allowed to be called good

counted

Two of the root's twenty occurrences are the form rabbā — to rear, to bring up a child (17:24, 26:18). QAC morphology over the Ḥafṣ/Tanzil text. That this is the same growth ribā counterfeits is a reading, and is offered as one.

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."

«as they raised me when I was small» — rabbayānī, from r-b-w.

[Pharaoh] said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us for years of your life?

Pharaoh, to Moses: «did we not rear you among us as a child?» — nurabbika, the same form.

What ribā counterfeits

interpreted· quran by quran

Form counts computed from the QAC morphology over the Ḥafṣ/Tanzil text (20 occurrences in 15 verses); the sense assigned to each occurrence is read from its verse. What follows from the pattern is interpretation.

Collect the twenty occurrences and the root's range is startlingly wide. Seven are the noun ribā, and three more verbs in 30:39 and 2:276 carry the same commercial increase. Then the rest scatter: earth swelling under rain 22:5, 41:39; two a hill 2:265, 23:50; flood-foam 13:17; a seizure that swelled past bearing 69:10; an oath-breaking community that outgrew another 16:92. And two — rabbayānī and nurabbika — are the raising of a child. Nearly every one of those is real growth: rain actually makes the ground rise, and parents actually make a child. Ribā is the member of its own family that produces nothing. The pile grows without anything having been grown. That is why 2:276 can say God destroys ribā and makes charity grow without contradicting itself — it is not denying that the lender's number went up. It is saying the number went up while nothing did. There is a sharper irony in the second child-rearing verse. It is Pharaoh's, spoken to Moses: «did we not rear you among us?» 26:18 — a favour recalled in order to be collected on. Even the root's kindest form can be turned into a debt.

What exactly does the Qurʾān forbid?

interpreted· quran by quran

A genuinely disputed question of scope. This is fiqh-sensitive; the atlas maps the readings and issues no ruling. Both sides invoke the same closing principle — «you do no wrong, nor are you wronged» 2:279.

Is every stipulated increase on a loan ribā, or only exploitative compounding?

Reading ACategorical — any increment over the principal

The prohibition is on the increase as such, whatever its rate.

  • 2:275 forbids al-ribā absolutely and permits only al-bayʿ — an exchange, not a loan-with-growth.
  • 2:279 leaves the repentant lender «rūʾūs amwālikum» — your capital only; any increment above it is what must go.
  • «Wronging none, wronged by none» reads the surplus itself as the wrong.
quran by quran

Reading BTargeted — exploitative, compounding gain

The censured ribā is the doubling, snowballing debt the text actually names.

  • 3:130 forbids ribā «doubled and multiplied» — describing the ruinous compounding of a defaulting debtor.
  • The «war» clause frames ribā as ẓulm, injustice — the wrong is exploitation, not increase per se.
  • The wider category of ribā al-faḍl (surplus in barter) rests on ḥadīth, not on any Qurʾānic verse.

Outcomes the text itself attaches to ribā and to turning from it.

Consuming ribā

«Those who devour ribā…»

  • God wipes it out

    2:276

the swollen gain is erased — yamḥaqu.

  • A war from God and His Messenger

    2:279

the only sin the Qurʾān answers with a declaration of war.

  • Repent → keep your capital

    2:279

«you have your principal — wronging none, wronged by none».

  • Ease for the debtor

    2:280

if he is in hardship, defer; to remit it as charity is better.

The ribā verses in full

interpreted· quran by quran

The passage that legislates the ban, plus its Makkan seed and its one narrative recall.

And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah. But what you give in zakah, desiring the countenance of Allah - those are the multipliers.

The Makkan seed: false increase weighed against zakāt, and found not to increase «with Allah».

O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.

The Madinan limit: ribā «doubled and multiplied» — the compounding named.

O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers.

The command to the believers: drop «what remains of ribā», if you are believers.

And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.

The war, and the justice clause: keep your capital — «wronging none, wronged by none».

And if someone is in hardship, then [let there be] postponement until [a time of] ease. But if you give [from your right as] charity, then it is better for you, if you only knew.

The mercy clause: defer for the debtor in hardship; remitting the debt is better still.

And [for] their taking of usury while they had been forbidden from it, and their consuming of the people's wealth unjustly. And we have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.

The recall: taking ribā «though forbidden» is «consuming people's wealth unjustly».

A war, and a way back

interpreted· quran by quran

No other transaction in the Qurʾān is met with «a war from God and His Messenger» 2:279 — and the same verse holds the door open: repent, and «you have your capital, wronging none and wronged by none». The map can count the root, trace the stages, and set the two increases side by side. What it cannot settle is where exactly the line falls between a fair return and ribā — the scope the jurists still weigh. The verse fixes only the principle: no one grows rich by another's loss, and no one is made to lose.

Questions

Is every stipulated increase on a loan ribā, or only exploitative compounding?

Tartīl presents this as an open question with more than one honest reading. Categorical — any increment over the principal: The prohibition is on the increase as such, whatever its rate. Targeted — exploitative, compounding gain: The censured ribā is the doubling, snowballing debt the text actually names.

In 2:276, God «wipes out» ribā and «makes grow» (yurbī) — grows what?

«Allah wipes out ribā and makes grow the charities (al-ṣadaqāt)» 2:276. The verb yurbī is the same root as ribā — the increase the usurer chased is the increase God gives instead to what is given away.
