A theme in the Qurʾān

المال

Al-Māl

The Qurʾān has a vocabulary for money — māl, wealth, and tijāra, trade — and it does something startling with it: it borrows that commercial language for faith itself, pricing belief as a transaction and Paradise as a profit. So is wealth the rival of God, or the text's favourite metaphor for the one deal that matters? This page follows the money — how it is earned, how it is held, and the trade the Qurʾān calls «never to perish» 35:29.

The believer's trade with God

interpreted· quran by quran

The Qurʾān lends the whole commercial lexicon — offer, price, purchase, profit, loss — to salvation. Money is its grammar for the deal that matters.

O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment?

The offer opens as a tijāra — a trade — that rescues from a painful punishment 61:10.

Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment.

The transaction stated outright — God has purchased (ishtarā) the believers' lives and wealth; the payment is the Garden, the contract 'written in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qurʾān' 9:111.

The hoarder's arc — Sūrat al-Humaza

interpreted· quran by quran

One short sūra follows the amasser from mockery to the Fire — wealth mistaken for immortality.

  1. Before104:1

    The scorner

The sūra opens on a character, not a coin: woe to every scorner and backbiter 104:1. Contempt for people comes first.

  2. The mention104:2

    Amassing and counting

His defining act — he amasses wealth and counts it over (jamaʿa mālan wa ʿaddadah) 104:2. The counting itself is the vice, wealth hoarded and told like beads.

  3. The illusion

The delusion named: he reckons his wealth has made him immortal (akhladah) 104:3. Money is mistaken for a defence against death.

  4. The Crusher

The verdict: no — he will be flung into al-Ḥuṭama, the Crusher 104:4. The wealth that promised permanence buys the opposite.

Two ways to get

Tijāra ʿan tarāḍ

تِجَارَةٌ عَن تَرَاضٍ

Getting by willing exchange — the one lawful road to wealth.

  • Lawful only as trade by mutual consent — the single exception to 'do not consume wealth in falsehood' 4:29
  • Weighed and measured in full — woe to those who short the scale 83:1
  • Honestly earned wealth (iqtaraftumūhā) is real; it is condemned only when loved above God 9:24

Akl bi'l-bāṭil wa'l-kanz

أَكْلٌ بِٱلْبَٰطِلِ وَٱلْكَنْز

Consuming wealth wrongfully, or piling it up unspent.

  • Eating one another's wealth in falsehood, and greasing judges to do it 2:188
  • Hoarding gold and silver, not spending it in God's way — branded with it on the Day 9:34
  • Amassing and counting wealth, dreaming it confers immortality 104:2

The Qurʾān's wealth-ethic — earn, hold, spend

interpreted· quran by quran

The text rarely names wealth without saying what to do with it. Three questions run through every mention: how it comes to you, what it is while you keep it, and where it should go.

How to earn it

الكَسْب

One lawful gate — trade by mutual consent 4:29. Measure and weigh in full; woe to those who short the scale 83:1. Never by falsehood, never by bribing a judge 2:188.

How to hold it

الأمانة

As a trust, not a title — spend from that in which He made you mustakhlafīn, trustees and successors 57:7; it is 'the wealth of God which He gave you' 24:33. To pile it up unspent is the one posture the text brands a sin 9:34.

How to spend it

الإنفاق

On the trade that never perishes — recite, pray, and give secretly and openly 35:29; strive with wealth and lives, and the price is the Garden 9:111. And never let trade itself eclipse the remembrance of God 24:37.

The Qurʾān never asks you to despise wealth — it asks what kind of trade you are making with it. Return to 35:29: recite, pray, give in the open and in secret, and the text calls it tijāratan lan tabūr, a trade that will never perish 35:29. This atlas can count māl to the verse, show that it leans Madanī, and find the single āya where wealth meets hoarding. What it cannot price is the profit the verse promises — the one figure that runs off the end of every ledger, into a reward the text keeps 'with God'.

Questions

The Qurʾān pairs māl (wealth) with one other thing in sixteen different verses — always the same word. Which?

Wealth and children — amwāl wa awlād — share an āya sixteen times (roots m-w-l and w-l-d). And the pairing almost always carries a warning: the two are a trial, fitna 8:28, and the adornment of the passing life, while the enduring good deeds outlast them 18:46.
