In Arabic the word for heart is built from a root that means to turn something over. Qalb — the seat of understanding, conviction, and love — shares its three letters ق-ل-ب with inqalaba, «to turn back on your heels», the verb the Qurʾān uses for a person who reverses after having believed 3:144. The same letters give taqallub, the tossing of a sleeper, and muqallib, one who overturns. So the organ the Qurʾān makes responsible for faith is named, in its own language, for instability. That is the article's question. If the heart is the thing that turns, what does the Qurʾān ask of it — and what does it say happens when it stops turning altogether?
«Not the eyes that go blind»
interpreted· quran by quranCounted: the phrase al-qulūb allatī fī l-ṣudūr, «the hearts which are in the chests», occurs once in the Qurʾān. Read: that this verse states the book's whole position on the heart is the reading.
So have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts.
The verse locates blindness in the chest, not the face — and it does so while listing hearts to reason with and ears to hear with, so the heart is named as an organ of comprehension, not of sentiment.
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
Its mirror: hearts they do not understand with, eyes they do not see with, ears they do not hear with. The faculty is present and unused.

One root, several lives
heart — the seat of understanding, named for the thing that turns — in the text

The dominant form by far, and the Qurʾān's organ of comprehension.
The counts and the forms are counted, and the nine branches sum to all 168. That the shared root means something — that Arabic named the heart after instability on purpose — is what the lexicographers heard in it, and a reading, not a measurement. Roots carry senses that drift; a shared skeleton is evidence, never proof.

The Arabic word qalb (heart) is built from a root whose basic sense is what?
The states a heart is put in
interpreted· quran by quranEvery state below is named by the verse it carries; the grouping into hardened / diseased / at rest is the reading. Note what the list weighs: the Qurʾān describes far more ways for a heart to fail than to flourish.
Closed
The Qurʾān's vocabulary for a heart that no longer takes an impression. Four different metaphors, all of them physical.
«God has set a seal upon their hearts» 2:7. The verb is the one used of stamping wax.
«or are there locks upon [their] hearts?» — asked of people who will not reflect on the Qurʾān 47:24.
Diseased
مرضA category of its own: not closed, but unwell — and the Qurʾān says the condition worsens.
The phrase occurs 11 times. In 2:10 it is followed by «so God increased their disease» — the one heart-state the text describes as progressive.
At rest
The smaller set — and the Qurʾān names a cause for it rather than a feeling.
What surrounds the sealing of a heart
interpreted· quran by quran2:7 is the verse most often quoted to say God prevents belief. Reading it inside its own passage changes what it answers.
- Before2:6
A description, not a decree
The sealing verse does not open the sūra. It closes a description that began two verses earlier: «those who disbelieve — it is all one to them whether you warn them or not; they will not believe» 2:6. The refusal is stated first; the seal is stated second.
- The mention2:7
«God has set a seal»
Then the seal, on hearts and hearing, with a veil over sight 2:7. Grammatically God is the agent — which is what makes the verse hard, and why it is a fault-line in theology rather than a settled point.
- After2:10
And immediately, the responsibility returns
The very next verses turn to people who say they believe and do not — and their condition is given a cause the Qurʾān attributes to them: «in their hearts is disease» 2:10, the sentence continuing «because they used to lie». The passage sets a divine act and a human one side by side without resolving them.
If God seals a heart, who closed it?
interpreted· quran by quranOne of the oldest disputed questions in the tradition, and the Qurʾān supplies text for more than one reading. Both positions below are held by serious exegetes; the page holds them open.
«God has set a seal upon their hearts» 2:7. Does the verse say God causes the unbelief He then punishes — or does it describe a consequence people bring on themselves?
Reading AThe seal is a consequence, not a cause
The sealing is what follows a settled refusal, not what produces it. On this reading God's act is the confirming of a state a person has already chosen — which is why the Qurʾān can seal a heart and still hold its owner accountable.
- The Qurʾān repeatedly puts the sealing after a listed human act. In 4:155 a chain of breaches — covenant-breaking, denying signs, killing prophets — is followed by «rather, God sealed over them for their disbelief». In 40:35 the order is the same: «thus does God seal over every heart of an arrogant tyrant», the arrogance named first.
- 2:10 gives the cause explicitly: their disease increases «because they used to lie».
- It preserves the Qurʾān's own insistence that «God does not wrong people at all; it is they who wrong themselves» 10:44.
- Weakness a fair reading must state: 2:7 itself names no prior cause. The sequencing has to be supplied from other verses.
Reading BThe seal is God's act, and the mystery is left standing
The verse means what its grammar says: God is the one who seals. Guidance and its withholding belong to God, and the Qurʾān does not soften this. On this reading the honest response is not to explain the verse away but to hold it beside the verses on responsibility.
- The grammar is unambiguous — God is the subject of khatama, as He is of «He guides whom He wills and leaves astray whom He wills» 16:93.
- The Qurʾān elsewhere says plainly that God could seal even the Prophet's heart if He willed 42:24 — which makes the sealing an exercise of divine prerogative, not merely a description of human habit.
- 8:24 states that «God comes between a man and his heart» — a claim about access to the interior that no account of pure self-determination fully absorbs.
- Weakness a fair reading must state: taken alone this reading strains the many verses that make people answerable for exactly this refusal.
The atlas records the fork — it crowns no reading.
One question

The Qurʾān names one thing that will be of use on the Day when «neither wealth nor sons» will avail. What is it?
What the Qurʾān says reaches the heart
interpreted· quran by quranEach outcome is stated by the verse it carries; the arrangement is the reading.
Dhikr — God remembered
The act the Qurʾān names as the heart's remedy: «by the remembrance of God hearts find rest» 13:28.
Hearts come to rest
13:28Ṭumaʾnīna — the settling the verse names as the direct effect 13:28.
Faith increases
8:2«when His verses are recited to them it increases them in faith» 8:2 — the heart is described as something with a quantity that can go up.
Skins and hearts soften
39:23«then their skins and their hearts soften to the remembrance of God» 39:23 — hardness reversed.
Guidance of the heart itself
64:11«whoever believes in God — He will guide his heart» 64:11, said in the context of disaster.
And, left alone, hardening
57:16The counter-motion the Qurʾān warns of: that time itself hardens a heart that was once soft 57:16.

Allah has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful your mothers. And he has not made your adopted sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allah says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way.
The root's only dual, and it is a denial: no man has two hearts inside him.
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."
The remedy, and the mechanism, in one sentence.
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.
«God comes between a man and his heart.»
And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead." [Allah] said, "Have you not believed?" He said, "Yes, but [I ask] only that my heart may be satisfied." [Allah] said, "Take four birds and commit them to yourself. Then [after slaughtering them] put on each hill a portion of them; then call them - they will come [flying] to you in haste. And know that Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise."
Ibrāhīm asks for a sign not to believe but «that my heart may be at rest» — even certainty wants settling.
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].
Said to the Prophet: had you been harsh of heart, they would have scattered from around you.
Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind].
«a reminder for whoever has a heart» — the faculty stated as the condition for benefit.
Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah, and for them is a great punishment;
The one verse that makes the heart, not the tongue, the measure of belief under duress.
But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart."
Qalb salīm — the sound heart, the one thing that avails.
The web the heart sits in
interpreted· quran by quranThe neighbours are those the Qurʾān attaches to the heart grammatically — what settles it, what closes it, what it is asked to do. Several are confirmed statistically: sealing, hardening and disease are among the root's strongest co-occurring companions.
The thing that turns
interpreted· quran by quranA page of counts can tell you that the Qurʾān names four ways for a heart to close and three for it to settle; that it says «hearts» 112 times and «a heart» 20; that the organ of conviction is named, in Arabic, for what will not hold still. It cannot tell you the state of one. That limit is in the text itself. «God comes between a man and his heart» 8:24 — the interior is described as a place its own owner does not fully command, which is why the believers in 3:8 pray about their hearts rather than simply resolve about them. The prayer assumes the turning will continue. So the map ends here. Ibrāhīm — who had already believed — still asked for a sign, and said why: «that my heart may be at rest» 2:260. The Qurʾān records the request without rebuking it.
